Preemptive Strike to Your New Year's Resolution!
By Sandra Amoako
A few days before every New Year, we hear the same question, "What is your new year's resolution?" For most people, it is joining the gym and losing weight, spending more time with the family, quitting smoking, quitting drinking, enjoying life or getting out of debt. Most people give up on these resolutions within a few weeks after the year begins and the cycle repeats itself so you have to ask yourself, "What's the point of having a resolution?"
Perhaps New Year's resolutions do not work because we do not take them seriously or we see them as tasks...as something we HAVE to do and not something we WANT to do. Perhaps we fail to see that resolutions are habits we are trying to break and like any habit, one cannot go cold turkey and just quit! Whether it is losing weight, having a positive attitude or getting organized, taking a step-by-step, part-of-your-lifestyle approach may be a better solution than deciding to quit eating chocolate on January 1st! Let us remember that it took us most of our lives to acquire these habits so trying to lose them in a few months or even a year might not be the easiest goal for most of us.
So do not wait till the first day of a new year to make a difference in your life...take a preemptive strike and start today. Whatever your goals are, incorporate them into your daily life. If you want to lose weight, eat a slice of dessert and not two slices, take the stairs instead of the elevator; drink a glass of water instead of a glass of soda or juice. These little changes will make a big impact and before you realize it, your goals will have been achieved and you will be saying "what new year's resolution?"
